Functioning of a SSPT
- The SSPT will meet once a month to discuss and plan, and all decisions will be taken in a spirit
of collegiality and collaborative governance.
- The Sunday School Calendar, from the month of June to the next Easter Season, will be planned
in advance, and include programmes and activities at the SCC, Parish, Deanery and, when required, Diocesan levels.
- The SSPT will network with the Diocesan Catechetical Centre.
- The SSPT will encourage catechists to go for training.
The SS Animator will oversee
the allocation of catechists and classrooms, be well acquainted with the correct syllabus prescribed, order books well in
advance and foster commitment and motivation to the Sunday School. Sessions for on-going formation of catechists could be
planned, to be held at least twice during the year, perhaps inviting outside resource persons to conduct sessions. At the
monthly SSPT meeting, the Animator will request reporting from the different Section Heads for better co-ordination.
Section Heads will meet
once a month with the catechists of that section and guide them regarding the number of lessons to be completed per semester.
Announce the dates for seminars/recollections organised by the Diocesan Catechetical Centre for catechists and encourage them
to attend. Introduction of a log book for each catechist may help to assess the progress being made and enable Section Heads
to help the catechists to plan their lessons and extra-curricular activities more concretely. Some of these activies could
be inter-class debate, field trips, etc.
Children's Liturgy Head should preferably not be allotted a class so as to be available to design creative celebrations and train
children for the Sunday Liturgy. The class given the responsibility for preparing it meets with the Liturgy Head at a conventional
time. This frees the catechist to concentrate on the syllabus.
Children's Choir Head is
in charge of the formation of a choir for the Childrens Mass. He/she selects the hymns for the liturgy, introduces and teaches
new hymns as required and co-ordinates with the Liturgy Head. A short practice of hymns could be conducted a few minutes before
mass. Fostering children to learn music and playing musical instruments will enrich the choir. Encourage participation in
Choir Festival/Competition held at Deanery level.
Parents' Programme Head
sees to the involvement of parents in the Sunday School by planning regular gatherings and activities for them centred around
issues of concern to parents. A calendar of Faith Formation Sessions for adults planned by the Diocesan Catechetical Centre
offers suggestions that could be implemented.
