The thrust of the Diocesan Catechetical Centre has been to organize a two-tier training for
Pre-Baptismal Catechists/ Animators in various Parishes. Initial training is aimed at the faith formation of the Catechists/Animators
themselves through six sessions conducted by professionals from various fields, like a Child Psychologist, a Doctor, etc.
The sessions are on Rites & Rituals, Christian Initiation, Grace of Baptism, Pregnancy, Early Childhood and lastly a methodology
session with communication skills and animation skills. In this last session, the Catechists/Animators are presented with
the attitudes of a catechist, the apprenticeship process which is the pedagogical foundation of catechesis and consequently
the structure and methodology followed for the four sessions.
Training in the actual Pre-Baptismal Catechetical sessions form the second level. Through these
sessions, the catechists/animators are introduced to the four interactive sessions for the expectant parents (formulated by
the Diocesan Catechetical Centre) of which Prayer and Ritual form an important part. Mock sessions are held to ensure
that the Catechists/Animators have the confidence and skill to conduct such sessions in their own parishes. A Trainer
Couple from the Diocesan Catechetical Centre is involved in this training programme and they accompany the Catechists/Animators
in their parishes until they are able to strike out on their own. This whole process is of 3 to 4 months duration.
The training process aims at developing in the Catechist/Animator an aptitude and the ability
to communicate the Gospel message, and be faithful to what the Church desires to convey to the expectant couples. And having
acquired the theological, anthropological and the methodological background, the Catechists/Animators are led to acquire the
experience of actually performing the function of Pre-Baptismal Catechesis under supervision.
